ANALYZE THE SYSTEM.

Media ownership is not a tree. It is a changing system.

Inspect who owns, controls, holds a broadcast license for, affiliates with, operates, acquires, separates from, or otherwise connects to major media organizations — without collapsing different relationships into the same claim.

Lenses

MACRO VIEW

Media systems at a glance

Start with proportional structure, then drill into the inventory. Width reflects the number of currently modeled ownership/control descendants — not revenue, audience or influence. Every bar is a navigation device into the underlying evidence.

DRILL-DOWN INVENTORY

Open a system to inspect its modeled anatomy

The inventory remains explicit because a scientific atlas must make every modeled entity inspectable.

LOCAL SIGNAL / NATIONAL SYSTEM

State media ownership stage

Select a state to reveal local outlets present in the modeled corpus, then follow each active ownership/control path upstream.

This view does not claim complete statewide media coverage. Verified geographic evidence is mapped; unresolved outlets stay visibly off-map.

FOLLOW ONE THREAD

Choose an entity

Search or select any company, network, studio, publication, legal licensee or station. Flipskillet will show its upstream control path and downstream portfolio separately.

Upstream: who sits above it?

No entity selected.

Selected entity

No entity selected.

Downstream: what sits below it?

No entity selected.

Structural comparison

Compare modeled mechanisms. This is deliberately not an editorial-influence score.

CHANGE OVER TIME

Transactions, separations and dated changes

The timeline only places an event when the corpus contains a transaction/change date.

PLACE + CHANGE

Where a modeled system touches local markets

Coordinate ownership-system selection with station markets and dated changes. Market positions are a deterministic schematic, not audience reach.

MARKET SCHEMATIC

DATED SYSTEM EVIDENCE

Changes visible at this cutoff

The scrubber filters dated evidence connected to the selected system. It does not claim to reconstruct ownership on that date.

WHAT DO WE ACTUALLY KNOW?

Coverage is a claim too.

Flipskillet reports completeness only for narrowly declared research scopes.

SCIENTIFIC RULE

Relationship type is evidence, not decoration.

A network affiliate is not its network owner. An FCC legal licensee is not automatically the public-facing corporate brand. A channel-sharing partner is not automatically a co-owner. A minority shareholder is not automatically an editorial controller. A pending acquisition is not current ownership.

FCC identity is its own layer

For U.S. broadcast stations, Flipskillet preserves the FCC Facility ID and named legal licensee/FRN as separate regulatory layers.

Operations are their own lens

Satellite-station relationships, channel sharing, TBAs, SSAs, JSAs, LMAs and similar operating arrangements belong in an operational relationship family.

Political and civic overlap

Documented political relationships remain a separate relationship family. Political proximity is never silently converted into editorial control.

What “structural footprint” means

It is the count of modeled descendants under a control system in the current corpus, useful for navigation, not as a measure of audience or influence.

Source hierarchy

SEC and regulator filings → official annual reports / investor relations → broadcast license records → authoritative public records → reputable reporting for context.
